In today's competitive pet food market, there are hundreds of different types of cat food to choose from. The question is, what type of cat foods will provide the best source of nutrition for your cat? This is when you can rely on Cat Food Reviews. Is it possible to purchase an inexpensive cat food that will also provide a sufficient amount of your cat's dietary requirements?
The problem with inexpensive or “economy” cat food is that it is usually made with lower quality ingredients that are not easily absorbed by your cat's digestive system. In addition to this, your cat may actually need to consume a greater volume of an inexpensive cat food in order to fulfill their basic dietary requirements (such as protein). Many cheaper cat food brands are able to manufacture their product for such a low price because they use vegetable-based protein in their formula. Vegetable protein products are much less expensive than animal-based protein products.
IMPORTANCE OF PROTEIN
Despite being domesticated, Cats are still carnivores by nature. By proportion, a cat's diet requires a much higher protein content than most other mammals. A cat's liver contains certain enzymes that aid in breaking down proteins. The difference is, in cats, these liver enzymes are always active. Some of the processed protein is used to fuel these active enzymes, which raises your cat's protein requirements.
Cats also have a proportionally higher protein requirement ratio as they mature. While other animals, such as dogs, have a decreased requirement for protein as they age (an adult dog requires only 1/3 of the protein of a growing puppy), cats maintain a fairly high protein ratio even after they reach adulthood. An adult cat's protein requirement is roughly 2/3 of the protein they required as a kitten.
PLANT PROTEIN VS ANIMAL PROTEIN
Cats are classified as “obligate” carnivores. This means that their diet has a fairly strict requirement of a high level of animal-based protein. Cats are lacking in certain enzymatic pathways, which prevents them from efficiently utilizing plant-based protein products as well as animal-based proteins. Animal-based protein contains a complete profile of amino acids. Plant proteins, on the other hand, do not contain many of the amino acids that are crucial requirements for your cat.
TAURINE
This is one of the most important amino acids that is required by your cat! Don't forget to be sure that the cat food you choose has an adequate supply of taurine listed on the label. Cats that don't receive an adequate supply of taurine will experience serious health conditions, such as blindness and heart problems.
CARBOHYDRATES
Many commercial cat foods contain a larger percentage of carbohydrates than your cat requires. Try to avoid any cat food that lists flour, corn or wheat products in the first five ingredients. In the wild, a feline's diet usually consists of only 3-5% carbohydrates. Some commercial pet foods have a 50% or greater carbohydrate content! Many carbohydrates can provide an inexpensive filler for pet food products, so be sure to read the ingredients of your cat's food formula.
